The Monster Index is a monthly analysis of millions of job opportunities that have been gathered from a wide selection of corporate careers sites and job boards across the UK. According to the March analysis, the index fell by 7 points in March on the previous month.
Overall year on year the index has fallen from 187 points in 2008 to 110 points in 2009 (41%). The top five industry sectors which have experienced the highest year-on-year decrease in demand for jobs are:
Industry March 2009 March 2009
Environment, Archtecture 68 252
HR 59 198
Admin, Organisation 89 212
Marketing & PR 121 238
Legal 120 234But it’s not all bad news, there are a four industry categories which have increased in demand for job opportunities. These include: Education & Training (15 points), Production & Manufacturing (11 points) Research & Development (3 points) and Construction (2 points). Although only a 2 point increase month on month for construction, could we be seeing the start of a few green shoots?
All regions, with the exception of Wales, saw a decline in demand for jobs month-on-month. Scotland saw the highest drop by 14 points in March and year-on-year demand has declined from 197 in 2008 to 100 in 2009 (49%) making it the largest regional annual drop. On the other hand, Wales has seen an increase of 18 points for March to 192.
