Just a few snippets from last week…

A recent survey by Noras indicates that 76% of job seekers would relocate oversees to enhance their career prospects. Senior Managers and Directors constitute of one fith of the respondents who are prepared to relocate and more junior level job seekers are more prepared to take training..

Peter Gold has posted some great tips to turn the ATS table and although much of it seams common sense, we are sure a lot of people could benefit from a quick read - Don’t be a slave to technology

Personnel Today have reported that the use of recruitment agencies won’t resume once the recession ends. A recent study by Oakleaf states that 70% of in house recruiters feel that the recession will have a negative long term effect. There has been a lot of recruitment companies re-inventing themselves in the last 6 months and the recruitment landscape is certainly changing… but what do you think about the long term viability?

    Best web application:
Still in Beta phase, but there is a new tool for facebook that makes it more like linked in for recruitment purposes.  Check out insidejob

Here is hoping for a sunny bank holiday everyone

    Labour Statistics May 2009

    Labour Market No Comments

The Office of National Statistics have released the latest Labour Market Statistics.  It comes as no surprise that the unemployment rate has increased and the employment rate and number of vacancies has fallen throughout the reference period Jan 09 - March 09.  On a more positive angle,  there are a few indicators in the report that may suggest a bit of a slow down.

A quick overview of the headlines:

The number of people in employment decreased by 157,000 over the quarter which now puts the total number of people in full time employment at 21.67 million

The unemployment rate was 7.1 per cent this is up 0.8 percentage points from the three months to December 2008

The number of unemployed people increased by 244,000 over the quarter, which means that as of March 2009, there were 2.2million unemployed people in the UK

The number of vacancies was 455,000.  This is down 51,000 from the previous quarter.

For a positive spin on the stats:

The redundancy rate increased by 1.1% to 11.3% on the previous quarter.  But when compared to 6 months ago when it jumped from 6.1% to 10.2% in the quarter October - December 2008, it has certainly slowed down.

There was a rise of 57,000 in the numbers of people out of work last month compared with a 74,000 jump in April, and a 137,000 increase in March.

The full document can be found on the Office for National Statistics website

Monster Index UK Shows Small Signs of Recovery for April 09

    Labour Market No Comments

The Monster Index is a monthly analysis of millions of job opportunities that have been gathered from a wide selection of corporate careers sites and job boards across the UK.  According to the April analysis, the index has risen by 2% on last month.  Year on year, however, the index has fallen 67 points, but it is the second increase in the last 3 months (February 09 saw a 6 point increase).

The regions to experience a growth are:

    Region                         April  2009              March 2009
    Scotland                                  114                         100
    Northern Ireland                     106                           93
    South West                             198                         189
    Northern England                    138                         133

The industry that show the greatest monthly increase was the Health care and Social Work sector, accounting for 39 points of the overall growth.  Other industries requiring an increase in employees were; Education, Management and Consulting, Legal and Transport.

After what appeared to be a stablising over the last 3 months, the Construction and Extraction industry fell by 4 points and are now at their lowest since January 2005.  The number of opportunities for HR workers continues to fall and month on month by a further 5%.

Overall, the report suggests that job market appears to be stabilising, however with the latest unemployment figures published tomorrow, it is expected to confirm a further 85,000 people out of work to take the overal unemployment figure close to 2.2m.  Watch this space…
