Mutiny Monday 10th May - Did it Happen?

Labour Market, Online Recruitment No Comments

Northgate Arinso predicted that the 10th May, was going to be the day when employers will be hit with the largest numbers of resignations since the recession.

The company believed that there would be a rise in the number of disgruntled employees after the Easter break.  They have also been waiting around for a long time for a pay rise or promotion, so were expected to start looking for jobs on the 19th April.  The 6 weeks cycle in job hunting dictates that last Monday would see an explosion of employees handing in their notice.

Just like Northgate, we are certainly seeing an increase in companies recruiting in the last few months, but the last 2 weeks has seen a constant growth curve, in line with the previous months. No volcanic explosions there!  Did it explode for you? Have you had a big rise in the number of people handing in their notice?

It will be interesting to see what the Monster or Reed Job index say for May….

    Why We Love Jobsite

Applicant Attraction, Online Recruitment 2 Comments

Jobsite have just launched their TV advertising campaign again and issued some statistics from the first week of the May campaign.

    Already they have achieved:

    • 862,000 visits to Jobsite
    • 27,000 CVs uploaded
    • 215,000 applications

This is a great result for the site and I am sure all their clients will benefit - We certainly get a huge proportion of the quality CV’s from Jobsite.

In case you fast forward through adverts on TV, I have posted the latest one below.

A mobile campaign is also being run.  This is showing 15-second edits of the TV ad on key mobile sites.

Some more reasons why we love them:

Jobsite is a really strong brand
Great mix of Niche job boards
Power a lot of the regional Press boards
    Graphically pleasing display adverts
It is easy to use as a job seeker

Finally, lets not forget that they are a great company to work with and our Account Managers have always taken the time out to understand our business and work in partnership with us, so that everyone can benefit.

You can see all of their adverts on their website

    Thanks guys!

PS can I have my money now?

Training and Teambuilding ….. why they are still important!

    Developing Talent 1 Comment

Brian Carlton is a director of Carlton HR and specialists in employment law, recruitment support and implementing policies and procedures.  This enables the small and medium sized businesses with employment, recruitment and training.  He uses a number of tools to help with team work and development and here he discusses why training and team building are still important:

Recent surveys show that only 69% of staff feel engaged (Source CIPD), while 57% feel like a low value commodity (Source Hay Group). Interestingly 70% of those who work for successful companies have a “passion for work. The UK average is 30-50% (Source CIPD).

So what message do we take from these statistics?

Improving employee skills and sustaining motivation are at the core of every successful business. Maintaining cash flow to help ride out the recession is crucial. However, without a skilled and motivated workforce, you will have unhappy customers and may be reflecting upon missed opportunities.  Furthermore, as the economy returns to better times, those people you did not motivate or train may be considering their career options elsewhere.

During a recession, there is an understandable reluctance to change jobs. Therefore, having had a period of relatively low labour turnover you may be facing a situation whereby you could lose some of your more talented people.

It may well be a mistake for them to go, but we all know how much greener the grass looks on the other side…….

It is important that you keep some training activity ongoing in key parts of the business, even if you no longer train across the organisation. Try to identify the areas that would benefit from additional development. Always follow up to ensure this learning is being put into practice. Set clear objectives for those involved.

Obvious essentials will include health and safety, internal policies and processes, as well as any technical or legislative requirements for specific roles. However, there is a clear business argument for investing in the ‘softer’ skills that make people more effective. These include teamwork, communication, motivation, delegation and coaching. Improving these core skills will lead to improvements in business performance at a time when it is essential.

Whether its teambuilding, basic skills, or cutting edge knowledge development, investing in your people will enable you to reap rewards later. Competition to run courses for you will be fierce so you will be able to obtain training at excellent rates.

By all means be more prudent with the development budget, but don’t strangle it.

Tetramap® is a new and exciting behavioural tool that helps employees to understand and identify their own preferred behaviour and communication styles and more importantly those of others.  At Carlton HR we are able to utilize Tetramap® to develop and strengthen the skills of your people. This has real benefits in terms of communication within and between teams. It will improve interaction with your customers, which will lead to better service and increased sales. All of which will quickly add up to higher levels of productivity and profitability.
