Career and Business Coach, Louise Lapish is a regular columnist for the Yorkshire Post and has recently written a series of articles about “How to survive life after redundancy”. In April she wrote a great article to answer many questions job seekers have when looking for a job. This comprehensive piece, covers everything from your facebook profile & creating your next job opportunity to everything about interviews. One really big lesson is not to keep your networking online. Louise also mentions the Yorkshire Mafia, which is an online Linked In group that has very successfully taken online to offline and worth joining.

SimplyHired.co.uk have just sent me their Press Release for today’s launch which gives them the first personalised job search experience by integrating with facebook. This means that job seekers can now utilise their facebook profile and friends on SimplyHired.co.uk to accessed customised job content.
I haven’t tried it yet, but apparently if you login with facebook you will be able to discover jobs based on your current or previous work titles, location, interests and your friends companies. From the search results page you will also be able to browse friends’ companies who have job openings too - How clever is that?
In a recent poll on SimplyHired.co.uk it was established that 43% of respondents devote at least half the time they spend searching for a job on social media sites. The doors are truly open now for passive candidates, but is this the next generation of job search?
A study of more than 1400 graduates by TMP & Targetjobs has revealed that 79% of graduates think that online social networking sites are key to employee engagement however, 70% do not want businesses to “sell” the jobs. There are some really good stats in the OnRec article.
Personnel Today have updated their redundancy tracker which unfortunately now sits at 189,010 employees that have been made redundant since September 2008

Are we seeing the start of the end of the recession? Manpower seam to think so with their survey this week “The Employment Outlook Survey” This shows a rise in projected hiring during October to December 2009 for the first time since Q4 2006. And, on the same day the REC & KPMG publish the first rise in permanent appointments for 17 months and the first increase in temporary billings since July 2008 in their “report on jobs”
In contrast, The UK’s Monster Index for August Jobs has fallen by one point. This is the fifth consecutive month that the index has remained generally unchanged. There was increased job demand in marketing/PR/Media Sector, whilst most decrease in demand in Education, Engineering and Telecoms. However, the US index has risen sharply by 7 points this month.
Total Jobs has announced a new partnership with myjobsscotland.gov.uk This will go live on Monday 14th September and add an additional 3,000+ Scottish based jobs to the site. PR at Ri5

Social Media is a growing tool for both job seekers and recruiters, but although over a third of employers are using the sites, a recent study of 18-24 year old found just 1 in 10 are using social media to find a job.
The latest unemployment figures have just hit 2.26m and unfortunately, over a quarter of employers are less likely to hire someone if they have been out of work for 6 months or more (Institute of Leadership & Management)
So, if you are looking for a job and want to stand out, start using your social media profiles to your advantage and if you are not on any sites at the moment, start building your network with some key sites. But, please make sure your personal profile reflect you as an employee on ALL the sites. Over 40% of employers are now checking social media profiles within the recruitment process and if you are using social media sites to promote yourself, this is going to be your first impression.
Linked In is a great place to start building your network (this site was also the second most visited UK Recruitment site last week). Twitter is quickly developing as a viable recruitment tool and there are many employers, recruiters and job boards tweeting their vacancies and company news. There is even list of all the recruiters at CareerRocketeer with some great tips to help you too. Don’t forget Facebook, ning, ecademy, bookmarks, wikis, video communities or any other groups, networks or forums that may also be relevant to your industry or job.
