What are the fastest declining and growing occupations in England?

For Fun, Online Recruitment 1 Comment

A few weeks ago I was at an event hosted by Tim Holden from Fluid Consulting. Amongst a whole host of discussions about women in business and the labour market, he shared some really interesting statistics with us.

True to form, Tim made it good fun.  However, this group exercise proved more challenging that I would have initially thought.

As a bit of a dinosaur within the recruitment industry, I was quite surprised at my lack of skill, especially on the fastest declining occupation categories.  So, I wondered if any of you clever people can do any better?  Can you fill in the missing blanks?

Leave your comments on the thread and then I will post the answers up next week.

Prize is on it’s way for the bright individual who gets all the answers right & no cheating!

    Happy guessing!

    Labour Statistics May 2009

    Labour Market No Comments

The Office of National Statistics have released the latest Labour Market Statistics.  It comes as no surprise that the unemployment rate has increased and the employment rate and number of vacancies has fallen throughout the reference period Jan 09 - March 09.  On a more positive angle,  there are a few indicators in the report that may suggest a bit of a slow down.

A quick overview of the headlines:

The number of people in employment decreased by 157,000 over the quarter which now puts the total number of people in full time employment at 21.67 million

The unemployment rate was 7.1 per cent this is up 0.8 percentage points from the three months to December 2008

The number of unemployed people increased by 244,000 over the quarter, which means that as of March 2009, there were 2.2million unemployed people in the UK

The number of vacancies was 455,000.  This is down 51,000 from the previous quarter.

For a positive spin on the stats:

The redundancy rate increased by 1.1% to 11.3% on the previous quarter.  But when compared to 6 months ago when it jumped from 6.1% to 10.2% in the quarter October - December 2008, it has certainly slowed down.

There was a rise of 57,000 in the numbers of people out of work last month compared with a 74,000 jump in April, and a 137,000 increase in March.

Unemployment Rises to 6.1% - To comment or not?

Labour Market, Online Recruitment 2 Comments

The latest Labour Market Statistics to November 2008 has received a massive build up, as the media waited in anticipation to deliver more (and expected) negative news.  Would consumer confidence be improved if the media did not do their job to the enth degree?  Would you feel more positive if we did not add to the doom and gloom?

Our web anaylitcs show that all our previous commenting on the National Labour Market Statistics came (with no media publicity) and went (with a reasonably high percentage of interest from our readers).

So, as a happy medium here are some quick headlines (rather than the usual full report):

Up until November 2008, the unemployment rate was at 6.1%, and the number of unemployed has increased 131,000 over the quarter to reach 1.92 million.  This is the highest figure since September 1997 and is now higher than Slovenia, Romania, Malta, Holland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Austria and Cyprus (Guardian)

The redundancy level was up 78,000, the highest since records began in 1995.  Add these figures to the ongoing daily announcements of redundancies - currently standing at 54,944 since 1st December 2008 (Personnel Today) and we look set to break some more records next period!

Is today going to be the busiest recruitment day of the year?

    Applicant Attraction No Comments

According to iProfile.Org it certainly is.  They are expecting an even bigger upsurge of CVs on last year and they are expecting record numbers of CVs sent to recruiters.

I will do a bit of calculating at the end of the month to see if the prophets were right….
